Blouberg Nature Reserve
This unique nature reserve is nestled at
the foot of the Blouberg Krans. Here visitors can admire
the wolrd’s largest breeding colony of Cape vultures. In
the plains below the dry bushveld savannah interspersed
by gigantic baobab and mashatu trees is home to a
variety of antelopes, zebras and giraffes.
The Ranch Lion Pride

The Bristow family have
been involved in wildlife rehabilitation for over 43 years
in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe. Ossie Bristow, a keen
conservationist and member of the Rhodesia National
Conservation Board, was well known throughout Zimbabwe for
his love of the outdoors and wildlife. Ossie had a
collection of orphaned wild animals which were
brought in to him, those that could be repatriated to the
wild were released in suitable habitats and those that could
not be released were housed on the ranch in the Beit Bridge
district.
Having
a selection of tame wild animals brought him to the
attention of the film companies, who always need tame
animals for close-up shots and to link intercuts that had
been filmed in the wild. He therefore decided to train some
of his animals for the movie industry as a means of raising
funds for their upkeep.
"With the turmoil in
Zimbabwe, we decided to relocate some of our trained animals
to The Ranch Hotel to set up a film and conservation tourist
facility close to Polokwane in South Africa. The Ranch Hotel
and properties are ideally suited for an eco tourism and
film destination, with the existing hotel to accommodate
tour groups and film crews and African visitors with open
plains and bushveld. Gateway airport and all hire facilities
are close at hand. Very shortly we will be establishing a
fully stocked game park with lion enclosures and all
facilities such as blue screen etc. for film production
companies.
Our animals have acted
in over four hundred films and documentaries over the
years. Films include Gods Must Be Crazy 1 and 2, Beautiful
People, Mountains of the Moon, (Patrick Bergen), Search for
the White Nile (Aden Quinn, Nigel Hawthorne). We recently
completed work on a lion story which is a feature film
produced by an English company released in January 2005
Kapama Cheetah Project
There
are various conservation organizations that look after and breed
endangered species of animals and birds as well as care for injured and
sick wild animals. One of the most notable is Kapama Cheetah
Breeding Centre. Learn in-depth what these animals
are all about and get to see them REALLY close-up. This is a very popular
excursion.
The
numbers of Cheetah in Southern Africa is at an alarming low total. Estimates are that fewer than 2000 of these magnificent animals exist.
One centre helping to increase those numbers is Kappama located
outside Hoedspruit. Not only do they care for endangered animals
like cheetah and Wild Dog, but they also care for sick and injured animals
brought to the centre by the locals. We offer you an unique
opportunity to get close to these magnificent creatures and to learn more
about them.
